Nothing could be more false than the impression that New Haven is one big college town for those who are unfamiliar with it. The city is actually made up of a large number of separate neighbourhoods, each with a unique personality and some that are better suited for students than others. Downtown
This neighbourhood, as its name suggests, encompasses the centre of the city that borders the New Haven Green, the site of summertime outdoor concerts and other activities. It is only five miles from downtown New Haven. Numerous major highways connect the town, and it is also well-served by bus and passenger rail networks.
The rolling, verdant countryside and charming small-town atmosphere of Woodbridge are its inherent beauty; transportation and proximity to larger cities mask this. There’s a vast network of hiking trails, excellent schools, secure residential areas with several student housing New Haven options and lots of places to dine, shop, and have fun.
Madison
Located in the centre of Connecticut’s Long Island Sound beachfront, Madison lies tucked away in the southeast part of New Haven County. Madison, named for the country’s fourth president, was first colonised in 1641. The state’s longest public beach, Hammonasset Beach State Park, and Surf Club Beach, with its picnic area and kayak racks, are popular destinations for those who enjoy outdoor sports. The town centre of Madison is home to a large number of enterprises, the public library, the Green Historic District, as well as numerous shops and restaurants.
The Shore Line East commuter line serves the Madison train station. It runs to Union Station in New Haven to the west, making connections to the MTA’s Metro-North line, Amtrak’s Northeast Regional, and Acela Express services easy.
Milford
The coastal Connecticut city of Milford is located in New Haven County, halfway between Bridgeport and downtown New Haven.
